Jackamo - Rest Easy
This was my first time working in JK(Not kidding) Studios. It was very fun working with the band and meeting them. They are all such talented musicians. We did a video shoot so we set up everything to record as more of a live session. My job primarily was to help with miking and laying cables. I was also assisting with anything else that was needed. We recorded three songs and I was able to mix one of the three.
Mixing this song was a challenge but I was able to overcome it and make it sound the best it could with what I had to work with. Many of the mics had a lot of bleed, especially the vocal mics. We were able to avoid problems with guitar and bass amps though, by utilizing the vocal booth. We set up some amps with microphones for the guitar and bass in the vocal booth so that there would be minimal bleed from them.
When I work with stems that have a lot of bleed through, I take the time to manually cut the silences. It’s a long process but in the end it really comes out nicely. It’s very noticeable in the drums where there are a lot of silences. Cutting through each stem to only have the hits come through really cleans everything up and makes for a lot cleaner and tighter drums.
For the vocals, I tried something new. I ran them through an isolating AI to get rid of the bleed. However, to keep the fullness, I layered these new vocals with the original to try to preserve the lost frequencies. I turned the volume up on the new vocals and kept the old stems at a lower volume. This ended up working nicely and helped to keep the vocals separate from the other tracks.
